Dental Fillings in Calgary, AB

Sometimes, no matter how often you brush, floss, or visit your dentist, cavities are unavoidable. At some point in your life, you will hear your dentist tell you that you have a cavity and that it needs to be filled. This is absolutely normal and, in fact, is a procedure that is performed for your own good and future oral health. Visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings actually enables your dentist to detect the cavity early, while it is still relatively minor and superficial. An undetected and untreated cavity can potentially worsen quickly, leaving you at risk for advanced decay or infection – at which point a root canal, or even an extraction, would be your only recourse. Getting small cavities filled in a timely manner by C U Smile Dental Care’s licensed general dentists prevents serious dental issues from developing in the future.

How is a Cavity Filled?

The process dentists use to fill a cavity is actually quite simple, and is generally completed through a single visit, with virtually no pain involved. First and foremost, a local anesthetic will be applied to the area around the tooth being worked on. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, your dentist will use a drill or laser to remove the decayed portion of the tooth.

After your dentist is certain that all decay has been removed, your tooth is filled with a dental filling of your choice which, after hardening, is sculpted to resemble the original shape of your tooth’s surface.

Types of Dental Fillings

Much has changed since the days when your only option for dental fillings was amalgam or “silver” as they are commonly known. Nowadays, you have a wide variety of alternative materials at your disposal, all with their own unique sets of aesthetic and functional benefits. Here they are:

Gold: Gold fillings are non-corrosive and extremely sturdy. Similar to amalgam, gold fillings can also last up to 15 years. As an added bonus, many patients prefer gold fillings to amalgam due to their more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Composite: Growing in popularity, these “tooth-coloured” fillings can be closely matched to the actual colour of your teeth, thus blending in and becoming virtually invisible, and can last up to about 5 years.

Ceramic: These fillings are usually made of porcelain, which is a naturally durable and aesthetically pleasing material.

Glass Ionomers: Created through a mix of glass and acrylic, these fillings last less than 5 years, which makes them ideal for children whose teeth are not yet permanent. Additionally, these fillings release fluoride which actively helps strengthen the interior of the tooth.
